Spousal allowance My boyfriend has been separated from his wife approximately 5-7 years now. In the meantime, has been giving his wife approximately $400-500 a week plus paying for the home she lives in , in Illinois. He also has paid for a 07 Durango in full over these years.Has paid for insurance on home, property taxes , and insurance on vehicle. Basically, in a nutshell, he has paid $3000 plus a month on average. not leaving him much to live on. she just sent divorce papers and typically thinks she can get alimony but in meantime she has had ample opportunity to get a job and provide for herself. He has been providing without being legally separated. doe this money count for anything... If he can prove he gave it? and he is from Illinois...so what exactly can she get as spousal allowance if these are the circumstances? |

Her lawyer will try to argue that she has a right to continue in the style of living to which she has become accustomed.
He, however, has on his side the factor you rightly mentioned -- that the ex wife never tried to do anything to find a job, a career, or schooling that could lead to a career.
He's apparently done nothing wrong in the marriage, and apparently there are no kids to support.
There's no rule that a husband has to be relegated to a life of abject poverty for the sake of supporting a lazy ex wife.
The truth will set you free. So let the truth come out. But never go into court without a good lawyer.
He may have to still pay a little, but not so much that it destroys his entire life.
